Let's dive into a hot topic that often gets brought up around the disc golf community: should disc golf be included in the Olympics?

As someone who has been around disc golf since 2009, working in media production and the growth of a large disc golf company, I have some thoughts to share on this matter. So, let's weigh the pros and cons together as I see it.

Let’s start with some of the pros. One of the biggest advantages of disc golf being in the Olympics is the exposure it would receive. The Olympics is an event that is on a global scale when it comes to people viewing. This would introduce the sport to so many new players which would boost interest in the sport. This increase in awareness would boost visibility which also attracts more sponsors which would lead to greater financial support and resources for disc golf.

Another positive aspect of why I think it would be beneficial to have disc golf in the Olympics is increased funding in the development of the sport. The growth of new disc golf courses being installed is amazing and having disc golf in the Olympics would continue this growth. I believe we would see current professionals and amateurs hone their skills so they could have the opportunity to compete in the Olympics.

Now, let's consider some of the cons. I have heard that some people are concerned that as disc golf grows, the original spirit of disc golf is being lost. A player’s disc golf journey usually begins by being invited by a friend and then that player gets hooked on disc golf and gets involved with a disc golf community. Disc golf is known for its friendly and inclusive atmosphere where players of all skill levels can get out and play. Some are worried that as the sport is growing we are losing the sense of community. 

Another challenge is making sure that there is fair representation and participation from all countries. If we had disc golf in the Olympics it would require efforts to support growth in underrepresented areas. This would ensure a level playing field for all players. 

The question of whether disc golf should be in the Olympics is a complex one. The exposure, funding, and development opportunities are enticing, but we have to consider the impact it may have on the culture of disc golf. If done correctly, having disc golf in the Olympics could be a big milestone while still preserving the spirit and camaraderie in the sport we all love.
